A Chip in the Sugar

March 17th-21st 2021
by Alan Bennett

Directed by Loveday Smith

QETC director Mark Winstanley plays gay but in the closet Graham. Middle-aged Graham still lives at home with his mam but their mundane lives are threatened when her old-flame appears on the scene. Tragically poignant and wonderfully uplifting, dark comedy abounds in Bennett’s observation of loneliness and unfulfilled sexual desire.

A Chip in the Sugar is one of the original Talking Heads series. Filmed twice by the BBC TV it starred Alan Bennett himself and in 2020 Martin Freeman. It was nominated for no fewer than 11 BAFTA awards.

Alan Bennett

Bennett's career spans 6 decades, since taking 60s London and New York by storm, writing for and appearing in  Beyond the Fringe.  Since then he has barely  been away from our TV screens and theatres. With a list of credits 'as long as your arm' (Habeas Corpus) he has become a household name with plays like The History Boys, The Madness of George III and films like A Private Function and Lady in the Van, both starring Maggie Smith, to his name. Talking Heads, uniquely, has been filmed not once but twice by the BBC.
